In Florida your AC runs most of the year, so a failure in July is urgent and a replacement is a big decision. Here is how to handle both.
What it costs
Florida contractors publish about $7,000–$10,000 to replace a standard central air system (2026). An older 2023 state estimate put typical replacements at about $3,900–$8,000. The size of the system, its efficiency rating and the condition of your ductwork move the price most. Compare quotes for the same size and efficiency, and ask what's included: removal of the old unit, permit, and warranty registration.
Permit and license
AC and heating contractors need a Florida state license (air-conditioning or mechanical), which you can check on the license lookup. Volusia County lists changing out an AC or heating system as work that needs a permit, and Palm Coast issues mechanical permits. Your contractor pulls the permit; if a quote doesn't mention it, ask.
Repair or replace?
A simple rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half of a replacement and the system is well into its life, replacing usually wins. See repair or replace for the full rule.
When it stops working in the heat
On any town page for AC, tick “Lists 24-hour service” to see who says they answer after hours, and call two. Ask for the earliest visit and what the service call costs before they come out.
