Lawn care & landscaping in Port Orange: what to know.

October 1 through May 31. Volusia County bans fertilizer with nitrogen or phosphorus from June 1 through September 30, and any time there's a flood watch or the ground is saturated.

During daylight saving time: odd addresses Wednesday and Saturday, even addresses Thursday and Sunday. During standard time: odd addresses Saturday, even addresses Sunday. Not between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. either way.

Does a lawn company need a license to fertilize in Florida?

Each person applying fertilizer for hire needs the Limited Certification for Urban Landscape Commercial Fertilizer Application, issued by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Mowing and edging alone don't need it.

Call any business on this page directly, or request a quote from one business on its page — that request goes to that business only. A request from this page goes to up to three businesses that list the service near your ZIP, and we email you their names. We don't sell your details. Give the job details and photos up front so the quotes are comparable. Comparing two or three quotes is the norm for anything beyond a small repair.

Lawn rules in Port Orange worth knowing

Port Orange is in Volusia County, and the county's fertilizer ordinance covers it. Fertilizer with nitrogen or phosphorus can't go down from June 1 through September 30, during a flood watch, on soaked ground, or within 15 feet of a pond, canal or lake. From October through May, nitrogen fertilizer has to be at least half slow-release, and phosphorus is only allowed if a soil or tissue test shows the lawn needs it.

Watering follows a set schedule. In daylight saving time (mid-March to early November), odd-numbered addresses water Wednesday and Saturday, even-numbered addresses Thursday and Sunday. In standard time it drops to one day: Saturday for odd addresses, Sunday for even. Never between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and no more than an hour per zone.

Anyone who applies fertilizer for pay in Florida must hold the state's limited urban commercial fertilizer certification from the Florida Department of Agriculture. It's fair to ask a lawn company whether their crew has it.
